The Story of a Boy, a Car, and a Dream.

Fraser McConnell

Always smiling, this Jamaican prodigy skyrocketed to fame and is the most competitively successful Jamaican driver in history. He began earning his place in the Jamaican record books as the youngest ever winner of the ‘Rally Jamaica’ title and the ‘Jamaican Driver of the Year’ for circuit racing at just 17 years old and still retains these titles.

Fraser McConnell, better known as Frazzz, developed an inherent love of skill and speed as a young man racing ATVs around the cascading country fields of Jamaica with fellow islander and sporting legend Usain Bolt. Little did either of these exceptional young men know where life would take them.

Frazzz made his rallycross debut in 2018, at 22 years old, competing in North America’s ARX2 series, where he recorded the fastest-out-of-the-box time in his first race and went on to win all of his heat races, starting his first finals in pole position. In his rookie season, he made it to the finals in four of the five events and ultimately achieved his first podium finish in the final event of his debut season.

His international racing debut was just one year later, with the FIA RX2 Championship with team Olsbergs MSE, where he finished 4th among the World’s best young rallycross drivers. His championship victory, to roaring crowds, in the 2019 Americas Rallycross Championship marked a Jamaican driver’s first and only championship win in the genre’s history.

In 2021, Fraser McConnell graduated to the supercar class and became the first and only Jamaican to claim a supercar victory in the Rally X Nordic Championship, defeating 4-time World Rallycross Champion Johan Kristofferson in Denmark. Later that year, he debuted in the Nitro Rally cross Series, where loyal supporters flooded the spectator stands with Jamaican flags and loud cries of “Team Frazzz.”

In 2022, Fraser raced in the Nitro Rallycross Series in both the Supercar and Group E (electric) classes where we dominated the Supercar Class to win the European Supercar Championship. The highly competitive Group E class features many of the world’s best rallycross drivers with the majority coming from Scandinavian countries but included British, American, and a sole Jamaican driver. Fraser was consistently in the top 4 drivers throughout the 10-event series securing 5 Top Qualifier and 4 podium finishes which earned him 3rd place in the Championship which required him to beat his childhood hero, Travis Pastrana in the last race of the season.

2022 was also a breakthrough year for Fraser when he was given the opportunity to be the Championship (Reserve) Driver for the Extreme E off-road racing series. After performing those duties for two (2) events, Fraser was given the opportunity to driver for former F1 World Champion Jenson Button’s JBXE Team for the season finale in Uruguay. This Extreme E opportunity seemed to “open the door” for Fraser to further advance his driving career in the season to follow.

2023 started very well for Fraser when he secured a contract to drive for 5-time F1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton’s X44 Team in the Extreme E racing series. Fraser also signed a contract to again drive with the Indianapolis based Dreyer & Reinbold Racing (DRR) in the Group E Class for the 2023/24 NitroCross Series.

Meeting him in person, you would never know that this uber-talented yet humble young man with a ready smile and great sense of fun has been showered with accolades, both internationally and at home. Proud patriotic moments include Jamaica’s RJR Gleaner National Sportsman of the Year Awards – People’s Choice Award and RJR Gleaner National Sportsman of the Year Awards – Athlete of the Year for Motorsport, and national recognition from Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness.

Despite all this, he remains true to his roots, with a passionate love for his country and a close-knit family bond. You will not find a race without  McConnells in the stands, frantically waving the flag and thunderingly cheering him on, but this doesn’t just encompass immediate family; every Jamaican-born motor enthusiast claims him as their own – and it’s reciprocated tenfold.

One of the big questions on both media and fan’s lips is, “who is Uncle Saaaal”. The fans adore him, and everyone wants the story. Saleem “Uncle Sal” Mahfood is Fraser’s Uncle. In his youth, Uncle Sal’s biggest desire was to be a racing driver, but with oh so many emotive echoes of Cool Runnings, it seemed like too big a reach for an islander. Frazzz brought this dream to reality for both of them. Despite the very impressive, big-name sponsors, Uncle Sal also wanted to sponsor his nephew in their joint vision personally. Every success for Frazzz is equally a shared and intimate victory for Uncle Sal.

No Jamaican reference to the iconic Cool Runnings movie would be complete without mentioning the egg kissed before every race. In the true essence of Frazzz’s sense of humour and patriotism, an egg now features loud and proud on the back of his helmet; which he does indeed kiss before every race. In turn, we continue to smile, love and salute the determination and grit of team Jamaica and Frazzz.
